Bike Bus 🚴 🚌

A Bike Bus is a fun group bike ride to school that follows a set route, so kids and adults can “get on the bus” at a convenient location and ride to school with their friends.

I’ve always loved cycling, and I’d love for our kids to have that same experience of fun and independence that I had as a kid.

That’s why we started a Bike Bus at WAS. In spring 2026 we started small, had several awesome rides, grew to our biggest ride with over 20 kids, and had one with the Mayor of Chatham! We plan to keep it going and growing for the fall!

How to ride the bus

Read this page, then join our WhatsApp group - request here and await approval (membership is restricted for safety). DM Adam if you don't hear back!

During the week we will confirm plans and any changes for the coming Friday. For now we plan to ride only in nice weather and in the morning.

On Friday morning, ride to your preferred "stop" - be early. We'll share our live location in WhatsApp so you can track us on the way. The route doesn't perfectly cover every neighborhood - open to ideas!

Afterwards, share your best photos and videos to the group 📸

Typical route

It's kid friendly

We ride slowly, about 5-7mph.
We try to avoid hills and traffic.
The entire route is ~2 miles / ~30 minutes - and most people join in the middle. Join us at the start for the longest ride!
Adult riders help keep the group safe and together (more on this below).

A few rules

All riders must agree to follow a few basic rules - especially if there is no adult supervising them:

Follow instructions.
Stay to the right and behind the leader. This is critically important for safety.
Ride safely, leave space. No racing, dangerous riding, or interfering with other riders.
Wear a helmet, follow traffic rules.

Should adults ride? (Yes!)

You must ride if your child is younger, less experienced, or can't carry their own backpack.
We cannot individually supervise each child, especially as the group grows. If you don't ride, your child must be self-sufficient or have another adult supervising them.
If your child doesn't need your help, please consider joining us anyway! It's a lot of fun, and we can use your help:

Adult helper roles

We need several adults to make sure the group is safe and stays together, AND you can wear a cool safety vest 🦺

Captains

Front riders leading the route and keeping track of time.
1-2 per group. Ride at 5-7 mph to keep the group together!

Sprinter

Sprint ahead of the group to block traffic at an intersection.
After the group passes the intersection, sprint to rejoin the group
2-3 sprinters are ideal.

Sheepdog

Ride alongside, keeping the pack together, on the correct side of the road, and riding safely.
1 for every 10 riders

Caboose

Keep to the back to handle any stragglers.
1-2 per group – more if there are younger kids and hills.

Crossing an intersection safely

Sprinters (red stars) go ahead of the group to hold traffic and direct the group, like a crossing guard.

The group waits at the intersection until the sprinters tell them to proceed.
The group proceeds through the intersection together as if it’s a single vehicle.
Sprinters catch up with the group.
